Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) and Human Security

ACSGRE is actively involved in small arms and light weapons advocacy initiatives in Africa to support and promote the development of capacity for research and analysis in SALW issues. The analysis focuses on their implication for peace and development, including their impact on women, youth, and vulnerable groups in society.

Activities undertaken under this program are implemented through a range of collective efforts, including joint research and advocacy, training, co-hosting workshops and seminars, and joint information dissemination strategies.

ACSGRE is especially keen on the full implementation of the Nairobi protocol and has welcomed partnerships with key stakeholders, including the Regional Centre for Small Arms (RECSA) based in Nairobi, Kenya. An inter-governmental body, RECSA works in the Great Lakes region and the Horn of Africa with state and non-state actors in coordinating initiatives to manage the flow and use of illicit small arms and light weapons (SALWs).

A number of ACSGRE staff have been actively engaged in advocating for the ratification and full implementation of the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) by all states in the region and worldwide. In these efforts, ACSGRE has worked in close tandem with Kenya Action Network on Small Arms (KANSA), the International Action Network on Small Arms (IANSA), and the umbrella lobby group Arms Control.

They have been involved in community dialogues, community sensitization, and media outreach in collaboration with other partners, especially concerning the area of voluntary surrender of illicit arms both in informal settlements in urban areas such as Nairobi as well as rural areas adversely affected by conflict exacerbated by illegal small arms.
